Unu spiro translates to "one breath" in Esperanto, a language in which one only speaks in the present tense. There is no past, no future, only now.
I began my one-breath paintings as a meditative practice to appreciate the present moment within myself. I became a mother in 2016. My life changed, and I changed. As I transitioned into motherhood, I felt more chaos than clarity, and felt the days and nights blur by with dizzying speed. Intuition has always been my guide, but I couldn’t hear my own thoughts. My breath did not come easily.
Meditation helped me to slow down, to breathe, and to hear my inner voice again. In my new role and identity, with limitations on my time and energy, and a need to understand my new self, I felt a desire to simplify: my process, materials, scale, colors and form. Following my intuition, I arrived at the Zen ensō (円相) - or the circle...and found stillness, peace, and gratitude for my new self.
Every breath is new. Every circle is new.
