Tengai means: horizon, beyond the the heavens, farthest regions in Japanese. Part of the ‘Passages’ collection, which explores the contrasts and overlaps of tangible and visceral experiences and memories I gathered after spending time living the Middle East and Caribbean. At first when I moved to Amman, Jordan in 2008 the deserts scared me. Instinctively you feel so small and vulnerable – just as you would in the middle of an ocean. But they were stunningly beautiful as well. The wide range of hues found in the rocks and sands were breathtaking and other-worldly. This painting calls to memory how an intense desert sandstorm colors everything a hue of orange.

The pattern in the middle and bottom right of the painting is inspired by the Jordanian keffiyeh, or cotton head scarf, traditionally worn by men to protect against the sun and sand. Also known as the shemagh mhadab the red and white pattern is unique and distinct to Jordanian from other keffiyehs worn in the region and represents the cultural heritage of Jordan’s Bedouin tribe. In contrast, the Palestinian keffiyeh features a black and white pattern (note: Jordan has a large population of Palestinian heritage.)
